Day-by-day plan

A paced plan, not an endless list.

Day1

Istiqlal Mosque, Kota Tua, Wayang Museum, and Glodok

Start at Istiqlal Mosque in the morning, before the heat and before Friday prayers, then ride to Kota Tua for the old square and the Wayang Museum. Have lunch and explore Glodok, take a long rest in the afternoon, and finish with dinner in Menteng.

  1. 1 hour

    Istiqlal Mosque

Southeast Asia's largest mosque, known for its soaring modern architecture

Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Indonesia and one of Jakarta’s most important landmarks, known for its vast prayer hall, modern monumental design, and role as a symbol of national unity. It is worth visiting if you want a sense of the city’s civic and religious heart, especially when it is quiet enough to appreciate the scale and details. Expect a respectful dress code, a living place of worship rather than a museum, and a visit that feels more meaningful if you are interested in architecture or local culture.

  2. 2 hours

    Jakarta Old Town

Wander the cobbled square surrounded by Dutch colonial-era architecture

Jakarta Old Town is one of the best places to feel the city’s layered history in a compact area, with old Dutch-era facades, public squares, and several museums nearby. It is worth coming if you like walking, photography, and a more atmospheric side of Jakarta than the modern business districts. Expect a lively, sometimes chaotic urban setting rather than a perfectly preserved old quarter, so the appeal is in the character and history more than polished sightseeing.

  3. 1 hour

    Wayang Museum

Fascinating collection of traditional Javanese puppets and performance art artifacts

Wayang Museum is a small, characterful stop for anyone interested in Indonesian storytelling, puppetry, and traditional performance arts. It is the kind of place that rewards a slower visit: you will likely see a mix of puppets, masks, and related cultural displays rather than a big blockbuster collection, so it works best as part of an old-town day out. If you enjoy museums with a strong local identity and a quieter atmosphere, it is worth the detour; if you want a large, polished, high-energy museum experience, it may feel modest.

  4. 1 hour

    Lunch in Glodok

  5. 1 hour 15 min

    Glodok Chinatown

Explore vibrant alleys filled with ancient temples, tea houses, and market stalls

Glodok is Jakarta's historic Chinatown, a dense network of alleys, old temples, tea and herb shops, and market stalls just south of Kota Tua. It is worth exploring on foot if you like busy street life, food stalls, and a glimpse of the city's Chinese-Indonesian heritage. Expect crowds, heat, and narrow lanes rather than a tidy sightseeing stop, and keep your bag close.

  6. 1 hour 30 min

    Afternoon rest

  7. 1 hour 30 min

    Dinner in Menteng

Day2

Monas, the National Museum, Jalan Surabaya, and Senopati

Start at Monas early, when the park is cooler and quieter, then walk across to the National Museum. After lunch in Menteng, browse the Jalan Surabaya antique stalls, rest, and finish with an evening in Senopati.

  1. 1 hour

    National Monument

Iconic landmark symbolising Indonesian independence, with a park around it and panoramic city views from the tower when it is open

National Monument (Monas) is the iconic centerpiece of central Jakarta, a tall civic monument that anchors the surrounding park and skyline. It is worth a visit if you want a classic city landmark with open public space and a strong sense of place, and, when the tower is open, the chance to look out over Jakarta from above. Expect a busy, local feel rather than a quiet memorial site.

  2. 1 hour 45 min

    National Museum of Indonesia

Treasure trove of archaeological artifacts and ethnography from across the archipelago

National Museum of Indonesia brings together a broad sweep of the country’s past, from prehistoric finds and traditional objects to art and cultural artifacts from across the archipelago. It is worth visiting if you want a compact overview of Indonesia before exploring more specialized sights, and the setting works well for a slow, thoughtful visit rather than a quick photo stop.

  3. 1 hour 15 min

    Lunch in Menteng

  4. 1 hour

    Jalan Surabaya Antique Market

Stroll past open-air stalls browsing antique porcelain, batik, and curios

Jalan Surabaya is a street of open-air stalls in Menteng known for antiques, old porcelain, batik, and curios. It is worth a browse if you enjoy hunting for vintage objects and don't mind bargaining, and it is close to the Menteng lunch area. Expect to sort through a lot of ordinary stock to find the good pieces, and treat 'antique' as a loose term.

  5. 1 hour 30 min

    Afternoon rest

  6. 1 hour 30 min

    Jalan Senopati

Walk through Senopati, a lively South Jakarta quarter of restaurants, cafes, and bars

Jalan Senopati is a lively street in South Jakarta lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, and boutiques, and it shows the city's newer, more social side. It is worth an evening if you want a relaxed contrast to the historic sights and a good choice of places to eat. Expect a dressier, more polished crowd, heavy traffic on the way in, and a scene that gets busier after dark.

  7. 1 hour 30 min

    Dinner in Senopati

Day3

Day trip to Bogor Botanical Gardens

A slower, greener day: travel to Bogor in the morning, spend the middle of the day in the gardens with a long lunch, and head back in the afternoon, allowing plenty of time for traffic before a farewell dinner.

Travel to Bogor (commuter train or car)

  2. 2 hours 30 min

Day trip to Bogor Botanical Gardens

Explore one of the oldest tropical botanical gardens in Southeast Asia

Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor) is a large, old tropical garden about an hour or more south of Jakarta, and one of the easiest ways to trade the city's intensity for shade and open space. It is worth a day if you want a relaxed walk among huge trees, ponds, and shaded paths rather than another set of sights. Expect a broad public garden with a lot of walking, heat and afternoon rain, and crowds on Sundays.

Itinerary decisions

What makes the cut, what can wait, and what is less worth it.

Essential

  • Kota Tua and the Wayang Museum
  • Monas and the National Museum, close together
  • Istiqlal Mosque first thing in the morning
  • Bogor Botanical Gardens for a slower day

Optional

  • Glodok Chinatown street food
  • Jalan Surabaya antiques
  • An evening in Senopati

Not prioritized

  • Museum MACAN in West Jakarta, which needs a long cross-city transfer of its own
  • A second day trip outside Jakarta

Before you use this plan

  • Hours, closures, prices, and conditions can change.
  • Days 1 and 2 are built for Tuesday through Sunday: the Wayang Museum, Monas, and the National Museum are commonly listed as closed on Mondays (and the National Museum on national public holidays). If you arrive on a Monday, use it for the Bogor day trip and check that the gardens are open.
  • Istiqlal Mosque is a working mosque: dress modestly, expect a free guided visit, and note that non-Muslim visitors are guided along a visitor route and do not join the main prayer floor. You may need to register at the visitor desk or online, and visits pause around prayer times, especially Friday midday prayers. The morning slot comes before those, but confirm current visitor hours.
  • The Monas tower has been reported closed for cleaning since 9 September 2026, with no reopening date announced, while the park around it stays open. If the viewing deck is still closed, treat this stop as a short walk through the park before the National Museum next door, and check current status and ticketing before you go. Monas is closed on Mondays.
  • Jakarta traffic is heavy, especially at rush hours, so allow extra time between areas and consider the MRT or a ride-hailing app. The Bogor trip commonly takes well over an hour each way and longer at busy times.
  • Heat and afternoon rain are common; the plan keeps an afternoon rest on each city day.
